We chat with Zen Juddhism about new music, the power of the internet and of course, world domination.
Zen Juddhism is the new music project from Jude Ωne Eight, the guitar man of HYBRID 6.0 and Le Lizard Royale. Joined by a few amazing musician friends and with the freedom to hop genres, this music will feel like a breath a fresh air. Zen Juddhism will be performing songs from their latest album at the launching event of the Southampton Sampler VOL.I on 1st of February at the Joiners (doors at 19:30). Make sure you’re there to see her perform and grab a copy of the vinyl for only £15.
What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major influences?Rock. It is that broad. Other labels I’ve given it are ‘designer rock’ and ‘Itchen delta blues rock’. Major influences would be Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, The Police, Tori Amos, Fountains of Wayne and Metric to name just six. Pammie is a big fan of The Beatles and Lana Del Rey.
How long have you all known each other? How did you meet?
Of all the people on the albums, I’ve known Marlene Rodriguez the longest, nearly a decade now. We were briefly in a band together called Tide. Everyone else was through other bands I’ve been in (Hybrid 6.0, Le Lizard Royale) or befriended.
When did you form as Zen Juddhism? What inspired you to make music together?
Zen Juddhism became real in early 2014. I just wanted to make the music that I wanted to, regardless of what it ended up sounding like from one song to the next. I knew some vocalists who’d be interested in helping out.
What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?
Just getting people to hear about Zen Juddhism and understand what it is. And buy the music! It’s an ongoing challenge but where it’s gone well has been due to people seeing a live show or reading reviews written about what it is.
What’s your ultimate direction for your band?
Total and utter world domination. Or die trying.
How do you feel about the internet in the music business?
It’s an asset and a liability. It’s great that you can quite easily get your music out there, but so can everyone else and thus how can one get heard when there’s so much out there?
What new music do you guys listen to ?
Reawaken, Exhibitor, Creeper, The Beaches.
How can fans-to-be gain access to your music?
It’s on every streaming and download site, i.e. Spotify, iTunes etc. whilst you can get CDs from CD Baby and the official website zenjuddhism.com
Follow Zen Juddhism on Facebook.
